Cleaning and Maintaining Your Alpha Systems Roof Membranes
Proper care and maintenance of the Alpha Systems roof membrane is critical to sustain years of trouble-free performance. Normal maintenance is simple, easy and requires no special materials.
Periodic cleaning (three to four times per year) is the primary maintenance required. Alpha Systems recommends using a non-abrasive household cleaner, such as dish soap, and a medium-bristled scrub brush. Do not use any harsh or highly abrasive products during routine cleaning.
When finished cleaning, remember to thoroughly rinse the roof and sidewalls in order to remove any soap residue and to prevent streaking.
Care should be exercised when working on top of your unit! The roof may become slippery when wet. Do not use acetone, or any other products containing petroleum distillates, on the Alpha Systems roof membrane. Use of these products will damage the membrane.
Periodic inspection of the roof, during cleaning, is highly recommended. Check the membrane for signs of damage. If damage does occur, the membrane can most often be patched (refer to the Care and Repair Instructions).
The Alpha roof membrane is quite inert and will resist weathering well; nor does it require the periodic application of products to protect it from ultra-violet light or ozone. In fact, these products can often cause damage to the roof membrane.
While inspecting the roof during cleaning, it is also important to check the lap sealant used in all termination areas. Inspect the existing sealant around all accessories and fasteners for signs of cracking or voids.
If additional sealant is needed, Alpha’s 1021 and/or 1010 sealant can be ordered nationwide at RV Dealers or online by visiting www.alphallc.us. Please note: only Alpha brand sealants can come in contact with Alpha roof membrane.
Alpha Systems Rubber Roof Coating
An EPDM rubber roof is comprised of two layers- a black layer, which is attached to the wood decking of the RV, and a white layer, which is the visible part of the roof. As an EPDM rubber roof ages, it is common for the white membrane to show signs of wear. Over time, the white, top layer of the membrane may become so thin that the black, bottom layer becomes visible. Alpha’s two-part primer and coating system can be applied to your EPDM rubber roof membrane to slow down this natural aging process. In addition, it will restore your roof membrane to its original white color.
The two-part system consists of a primer and a top coat. When the top coat dries, it forms an acrylic coating which not only adds a durable layer to your roof, but seals it and prolongs its life as well. The primer and top coat are easy to apply with a short nap roller, like you use to paint your house. Simply roll on the primer and wait 20 minutes before rolling on the top coat. (Times may vary depending on outside temperature and sun exposure.) The primer is an adhesive and is very sticky! You cannot walk on it, therefore we recommend coating your roof in sections; roll on a section of primer, wait 15-20 and apply top coat, then move back and do you next section.
Each gallon of primer covers approximately 160 square feet. Each gallon of top coat covers approximately 200 square feet. Alpha recommends that you apply two coats of the top coat to your roof. Please reference the 4034 Technical Data Sheet for additional information and instructions.
We do recommend 2 coats of the top coat, you can wait until the next day to apply that second coat.
NOTE: The seal and top coat should only be applied to roof membranes that do not exhibit any leaking. This product is not intended to function as a patch. If your roof is leaking, we recommend that you take it to a service center for evaluation.
Recommended Heat Weld Repair Procedures for the Superflex or Alpha-ply Membrane
Items Needed for Repair
- An industrial hot air gun (Readily available at most hardware stores.)
- Piece of roofing membrane
- Hand-held linoleum roller
Repair Procedures
- Identify the size of the area to be repaired.
- Thoroughly clean the area using mild soap and water.
- Cut an oval or circular piece of membrane, which is 2” larger in diameter than the area to be repaired. (There should be no corners.)
- Hold the patch material in one hand while heating the area that is to be repaired. As the material is being heated, apply patch material in a reverse peel motion. Proper heat is applied when the patch material and the existing roof membrane bond together and do not pull apart.
- After the patch is bonded to the roof membrane, apply moderate heat and roll the repaired area with a hand held linoleum roller.
- Alpha recommends adding a 3/8” bead of Alpha Systems 1010 Non-Sag Sealant (Superflex non-sag sealant) around the perimeter of the patched area.
- The repair is complete.
Future Maintenance: During routine cleaning (3-4 times a year), the patch should be inspected, as well as the sealants applied along moldings and around vents.

Recommended Repair Method for Alpha Systems Roofing Membranes
Patch System for Along the Roof Edge
- Remove the side awning (if necessary) and any side molding that covers the roof edge.
- Thoroughly clean the area to be patched with a household cleaner such as Spic-nSpan or Dawn. Do not pour the cleaner directly onto the roof, but on a separate rag. Clean thoroughly and wipe off any oxidation buildup.
- The patch is approximately 6” wide. Starting at the edge of the membrane, this is wrapped over the side of the unit, measure up 6”. (This measurement will begin on the sidewall and finish on the roof of the unit.) Using this measurement, generate a chalk line on the roof of the unit.
- Apply Alpha’s Primer Activator to a scratch pad. Use the scratch pad to apply the primer to the SuperFlex membrane. The membrane should be clean and slightly tacky before applying the patch.
- Roll the patch out along the entire length of the roof, using the chalk line as a guide. The other edge of the patch will hang over the side of the unit. Use hand pressure to position and then once fully in place use a hand roller to fully adhere the patch. Work out any air bubbles using the hand roller.
- Reapply the side molding along the Superflex roof line. Use putty tape or butyl tape underneath the molding to help prevent water penetration.
- Apply a generous bead (minimum 3/8”) of Alpha Systems 1010 Non-Sag Sealant along the patch line on top of the roof.
- The repair is complete.
For Future Maintenance: During routine cleaning (3-4 times a year), all caulk and sealants should be inspected for voids or cracking. If the caulk is cracking, pull up any loose caulk. Do not use any tools that could puncture the rubber roof membrane. If the caulk is still adhered to the roof, simply apply a generous amount of Alpha Systems 1010 Sealant on top of the existing caulk.
Recommended Roof Repair Method for Alpha Systems Superflex Membrane
6” Cover Tape for use along width of Roof
- Remove all necessary roof edge moldings attached to the area where the membrane will be seamed.
- Evaluate existing roof decking. If decking is soft, please replace. See Alpha SuperFlex Installation Instructions on applying adhesive to decking with the replacement membrane. Butt this new piece of SuperFlex roofing directly next to unaltered adhered, existing SuperFlex roof membrane.
- Thoroughly clean the area to be seamed with a household cleaner such as Spic-nSpan or Simple Green. Do not pour the cleaner directly onto the roof, but on a separate rag. Clean thoroughly and wipe off any oxidation build up.
- After cleaning, apply Alpha’s Primer Activator to a scratch pad. Use the scratch pad to apply the primer to the SuperFlex roof membrane, 3.5 inches on each side of the seam. The membrane should be clean and slightly tacky before applying the patch.
- Alpha’s Cover Tape is approximately 6” wide. Roll the tape out along the entire width of the roof. To ensure adequate length, cut cover tape so both edges overhang over the side of the unit. Starting at one end of the unit, remove the release paper from the underside of the patch. Use hand pressure to position the patch in place as the release paper is removed. Once the release paper has been removed from the entire patch, use a hand roller to fully adhere the patch. Work out any air bubbles using the hand roller.
- Use butyl tape underneath the roof edge moldings to help prevent water penetration. Reapply roof edge moldings.
- Apply a generous bead (1/2” in diameter) of Alpha Systems 1010 Non-Sag Sealant along both edges of the cover tape.
- The repair is now complete. To order products, call 800-462-4698. Please allow 5-7 business days before product ships from our facility. Shipping charges will be added.
For Future Maintenance: During routine cleaning (3-4 times a year), all caulk and sealants should be inspected for voids or cracking. If the caulk is cracking, pull up any loose caulk. Do not use any tools that could puncture the SuperFlex roof membrane. If the caulk is still adhered to the roof, simply apply a generous amount of Alpha Systems 1010 Sealant on top of the existing caulk.
Holding & Fresh Tank Maintenance
Gray Tank
Regularly check all plumbing connections to tank, and ensure any butyls/sealants/clamps are in working order to prevent leaks. To clean, it is recommended to use a small amount of liquid dish soap or other polyethylene safe cleaner to ensure your gray tank is clean, especially after extended periods of time of non-use. The soap/cleaner can be applied through any fixture connected to the gray tank, along with several gallons of fresh water. Best results can be obtained when this mixture can be “agitated” when driving the unit down the road. Ensure your gate valves are closed during this process. Drain and repeat the process as necessary. When the unit is in use, it is recommended to keep several gallons of water in the gray tank to prevent any buildup of waste matter. When winterizing the unit, it is recommended to ensure the gray tank is clean and completely drained to prevent any water from freezing and potentially causing damage to the tank.
Black Tank
Regularly check all plumbing connections to tank, and ensure any butyls/sealants/clamps are in working order to prevent leaks. If your unit is equipped with a tank flush system, it is recommended to use this system several times after each use. To clean/disinfect, use a small amount of cleaning solution/degreaser/soap recommended for RV black tanks and safe for polyethylene. The cleaner/soap can be applied through the stool connected to the black tank and flushed, along with several gallons of fresh water. Best results can be obtained when this mixture can be “agitated” when driving the unit down the road. Ensure your gate valves are closed during this process. Drain and repeat the process as necessary. When the unit is in use, it is recommended to keep several gallons of water in the black tank to prevent any buildup of waste material or foreign matter. When winterizing the unit, it is recommended to ensure the black tank is clean and completely drained to prevent any water from freezing and potentially causing damage to the tank.
Fresh Tank
Regularly check all plumbing fitting connections to tank, and ensure any butyls/sealants are in working order to prevent leaks. It is recommended to sanitize the fresh tank annually or before storing for a long period of time. When winterizing, refer to the OEM instructions/guidelines. Prior to next use, ensure all RV antifreeze is flushed through the entire fresh water system several times and dumped before filling the fresh tank with potable water. When storing the unit for winter, it is recommended to ensure the fresh tank is clean and completely drained to prevent any water from freezing and potentially causing damage to the tank.
Tuff-ply Marine Flooring Cleaning Instructions
To clean the TUFF PLY marine flooring first use low sudsing soap like SPIC AND SPAN, SIMPLE GREEN, or 409. If the boat is being cleaned while it is in a body of water an environmentally safe detergent should be used. Scrub using a rag, sponge or soft bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly with water.
A power washer may also be used with a fanned tip and a maximum pressure of 1500 psi. Avoid direct contact around attachment areas and protrusions through the floor to prevent the pressurized water from forcing its way under the flooring. Most dirt can be removed using the power washer without soap but tougher stains may require a soap and rinse cycle.
For extreme stains or spills, please contact Alpha Systems, LLC for further cleaning instructions.
Skylight Cleaning Instructions
To clean a polypropylene skylight, use a mild solution of dish soap and lukewarm water with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Avoid harsh, abrasive, or ammonia-based chemicals, which can damage the plastic and cause clouding or yellowing. For safety, always work on a stable surface and do not stand on the skylight itself.
Cleaning the exterior:
1. Rinse to remove loose debris. Use a garden hose to gently spray the skylight and wash away dirt, leaves, and other loose debris. This prevents scratching the surface during the scrubbing phase.
2. Wash with soapy water. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge attached to an extension pole to wash the skylight gently. Work in small sections, wiping away grime without scrubbing aggressively.
3. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the skylight completely with a clean garden hose, starting from the top and working your way down. This removes all soapy residue that could leave streaks or attract new dirt.
4. Dry to prevent spots. To avoid water spots, dry the skylight with a clean chamois or soft, absorbent cloth. A moist cellulose sponge also works well.
Cleaning the interior:
1. Remove dust. Use a microfiber duster on an extension pole to clear away any loose dust.
2. Wipe with a mild solution. Apply your mild dish soap and lukewarm water solution with a soft cloth. You can also use a mixture of 1 part distilled white vinegar to 1 part distilled water for stubborn spots.
3. Dry without streaks. Wipe the surface dry with a clean, lint-free cloth, or use a squeegee if you prefer.
What to avoid when cleaning polypropylene
• Abrasive cleaners or tools: Never use scouring powders, steel wool, or stiff brushes, as these will permanently scratch the surface.
• Harsh chemical cleaners: Avoid cleaners that contain ammonia (like some glass cleaners), benzene, acetone, or chlorine bleach, as they can damage or cloud the plastic.
• High-pressure water: Do not use a pressure washer, as the force can damage the skylight’s seals and force water underneath the flashing.
• Cleaning in hot sun: Do not clean the skylight on a hot, sunny day, as the cleaning solution can dry too quickly and leave streaks or water spots.
• Scraping: Never use razor blades or other sharp instruments to scrape off tough spots, as this will scratch the surface.

We constantly collaborate with our OEM partners to help design, create and mold new products on a regular basis!
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. These roofs have two layers and are manufactured using synthetic rubber compounds. The bottom layer is black and the top layer is white. For the most part, the industry moved away from rubber roof installations in 2011.
Alpha’s SuperFlex roofing membrane is a TPO, which stands for thermoplastic polyolefin.
TPO is a single-ply membrane. The membrane will not chalk like an EPDM rubber roof. TPO is 50% lighter than EPDM and PVC, has a textured surface for traction, and is resistant to mold, algae and fungus. All of these features plus more make the SuperFlex TPO the roofing membrane of choice, all while having the same great flexibility as EPDMrubber for the curves and designs of today’s RV units.
A unit manufactured after 2012 with Alpha’s membrane would have a TPO roof. Whether it is Alpha’s previous Alphaply membrane or the current SuperFlex membrane, both are considered TPO products.
For an older unit it could be either rubber (EPDM) or one of our TPO roofs. You can determine this by the texture of your roof.
Rubber roof (EPDM) – Is flat, smooth and very chalky to the touch. It loses its’ white layer over time exposing a black layer underneath.
TPO roof (SuperFlex or Alphaply) – Has a texture like an orange peel and is white all of the way through the membrane. The recommended maintenance for both types of TPO roof systems is similar.
All of Alpha’s SuperFlex sealants are compatible with either TPO or rubber roofs. 1021 self-leveling sealant is ideal for placement around roofing fixtures. The 1010 non-sag is used for vertical applications.
If covering over existing sealant, make sure the current sealant is clean and dry. (If dirty, it should be cleaned with a household cleaner.) Any loose sealant or debris that can be easily pulled off using your fingers should be removed. New sealant can then be applied directly over the old.
Sealant must be allowed to cure for at least 4 hours before being exposed to any rain or water. The temperature for applying caulk is 40 degrees and above. All caulking must be stored at room temperature.
No, our SuperFlex 1010 and 1021 sealants do not require a primer. Only our Alphathane sealant requires a primer.
Please be sure to verify the type of roof you have first – TPO or EPDM.
EPDM/rubber roof – Make sure whatever coating is chosen states that it is ok for an EPDM rubber roof.Alpha roof coating is a two part system (primer and top coat) sold under the brand name SuperFlex. The coating will typically last 4-5 years.
SuperFlex All In One Adhesive & Primer (8010/8011) – Each gallon covers approximately 160 sqft. It is an adhesive; you cannot walk on it, therefor it is recommended that you apply it in sections.
Superflex Rubber Roof Coating (4034) – Each gallon covers approximately 200 sqft. We recommend you purchase enough for 2 coats.
Application: Apply in temperatures of at least mid-40’s and above. Make sure the roof is clean and dry. Use an extended handle roller (short nap), and apply a section of primer (primer is an adhesive and you cannot walk on it!). The primer goes on thick and white like Elmer’s glue. Once the adhesive starts to turn clear (15+ minutes depending on outside temperature). It is at its stickiest and you can go ahead and apply the top coat. Move back and do your next section. Once you are completely done with the first layer of primer and top coat, let it dry and apply the second coat of the top coat the next day.
TPO – No coatings are necessary, as TPO is not a rubber, it is a plastic. The coatings made for rubber roofs will not adhere well to the TPO roof and will peel off much sooner than they would off a rubber roof. A TPO roof does not wear away and get thinner over time the way rubber roofs do, which is why a coating is not necessary.
No special cleaners are necessary; just use a household cleaner like Dawn dish soap. Clean 2-3 times a year and inspect the caulking. Only once a rubber roof is more black than white it is a good time to think about a roof coating.
Verify the type of roof you have. TPO – Just regular cleaning and maintaining of the caulking is sufficient. No protectants/coatings are needed. EPDM – Nothing is needed. If there is chalking, the Protect-All brand of UV protectant does a good job of sealing the surface and slowing down the oxidation/chalking.
Rubber roofs have a very thin top white layer and a thicker black layer underneath. The white layer is considered cosmetic and is only as thick as a sheet of paper; it is the black layer that is your real protection. As the roof ages and is exposed to the sun and the elements, the white layer oxidizes and starts to chalk and wear away. This is the normal aging process of the roof and does not mean the roof is going to fail or start to leak.
Once an EPDM roof is more black than white, it is a good time to think about a roof coating.
Some people opt to let their roof go completely black, this is ok as well. This just means you should start using rubber roof conditioners to keep the rubber membrane from drying out.
A product that you can find at any RV supply store or dealership is the Eterna-bond tape. It has really good adhesion and is an excellent patching product that will adhere to both EPDM rubber and TPO roof.
Alpha also sells a patch kit that comes with a 2 x 3 ft piece of membrane and a tube of 1021 sealant (self-leveling). It can be heat welded down or adhered using a plastic and vinyl adhesive.
For edge splits we offer a 6” wide patch.
Testing has found that it is the waterproofing spray that is applied to the cut edges of the wood used for decking that causes this issue. At times, this spray interacts with the membrane occasionally causing the roof membrane to grow/attract mildew in the areas where that spray is underneath the membrane, this is why you only see the lines where the seams of the decking meet underneath.
Upon inspection it is found that the underside of the membrane is still completely white. The decking water proofing spray causes a reaction with the membrane, mildew can grow on the surface of the membrane in those areas. Alpha hastested pieces of membrane that this has happened to and found that the membrane is not compromised. This is just a cosmetic issue and will not affect the ability of the membrane to keep water out and perform as intended. With a lot of experimentation Alpha has found a cleaning method that will clean most, if not all, of the stains off of the roof.
Materials required – soft brass bristle brush, bleach, clean rag, hose or power washer
- Brush on 3-5 mils of bleach with small paint brush to affected areas.
- Let the bleach sit for 10 minutes.
- Take soft brass bristle brush and scrub vigorously to clean stained areas.
- To achieve maximum effect, wipe scrubbed area with a clean rag, then hose/power wash the same area to rinse remaining residue.
- The cleaning procedure is now complete!
Since this has been determined to be a cosmetic issue with the membrane, this would not be covered under the warranty.
The solvents in the 1021 self-leveling sealant temporarily swell the roofing membrane. In the warmer months it takes 3-5 days to go away & 5-9 in the colder months.
Alpha Systems’ Tuff-Ply Flooring is a TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) flooring membrane with a spun polyester (fleece) backing.
Alpha Systems only recommends Alpha supplied water base adhesives, 3080 or 3011 TPO adhesive, in the installation of Tuff-Ply Flooring. The adhesive is sold in one gallon pails, five gallon pails, 55 gallon drums, or 316 gallon totes.
Apply Alpha Systems’ adhesive to the porous substrate with a brush, roller, or trowel. Your surface should be free of dirt, oil, or other contaminants. Apply a coat of adhesive to the surface (16-20 mils) then mate with the Tuff-Ply Flooring membrane. The adhesive open time is 5-10 minutes. Use a 70 lb. linoleum roller (or equivalent) to apply pressure so that the adhesive can properly penetrate into the fleece. It is always a good idea to roll the membrane in both directions to eliminate all air pockets. Immediately following the rolling process, mechanically fasten the perimeter of the Tuff-Ply Flooring.
Alpha Systems currently has three different, but distinct flooring patterns to choose from. Tuff-Ply levant has an orange-peel textures and is popular in the marine industry. Tuff-Ply diamond plate has a raised profile made to resemble a crisscross diamond plate metal, very popular in cargo trailers. Tuff-Ply nickel plate resembles continuous side-by-side circles, the size of a nickel.
Alpha Systems is a manufacturer that can customize to meet our customers’ needs. Standard roll packaging is 102” width with two thicknesses: .050” and .100”.
No, all Alpha butyl tapes have a 100% solid content and contain zero VOCs.
Alpha manufactures many different tape sizes, ranging from 1/32”- 3/8” in thickness, and 3/8” to 4” in width. Additional sizes may be available upon request.
White, black and gray are the colors of butyl tape currently offered.
Most likely! Alpha offers tapes specifically formulated for use in RV, HVAC, marine, automotive, concrete, and metal building applications.
Alphabond, our specially formulated roofing repair tape, does not require a primer. However, surfaces should be clean, dry and free of greases and oils in order to ensure optimum performance.
Compared to other gasketing materials, butyl tape holds several critical advantages. Most notably, it is cleaner, safer and easier to work with than solvated products. Compared to open and closed cell foam tapes, butyls have a long track record of superior durability and typically at a lower price. In both field and laboratory settings butyl tapes have proven to withstand the elements longer and more effectively than their foam and solvated counterparts.
All of JM’s tested and approved binder alternatives contain no added formaldehyde and do not emit formaldehyde.
Depending on volume and size variations purchased a drop trailer program is available. Please contact an Alpha Systems sales representative for more information.
JM insulation is made of long resilient glass fibers bonded with a thermosetting resin. It will not rot, mildew or deteriorate and is non-corrosive to pipes, wiring and metal studs.
Alpha manufacturers an 11×69 and 12×69 fender skirt.
Alpha fenderskirts are made from polypropylene and will not crack. They are very durable and act as a rubberized plastic.
The fenderskirts are mechanically fastened.
The rough opening is 13.25” x 11.25”.
Alpha Systems manufactures both inner and outer dome skylights with polyethylene resins. Polypropylene is a common plastic resin.
Alpha Systems offers inner and outer domes to fit a standard 14” x 22” opening.
Alpha Systems’ skylights are made from injection molding, so they are 20% thicker than the rest of the competition skylights, which are vacuum-formed. The skylight nailing flange is 20% thicker than any other competitor skylight. This additional thickness from the injection molded process ensures a flat, properly seated nailing flange, keeping water outside of your RV or cargo trailer. The competition has a wavy, leak-prone nailing flange comprised of flimsy, thin, vacuum-formed plastic.
Apply 3011 using a 9” paint roller. This is a water base material that can be used on “foam” backed “rolled goods” materials; like soft ceilings in motorhomes. When applying, bed sheet the material applying half of the adhesive to one side and then quickly press the rolled goods material into the adhesive. Then repeat the process on to the other half.
The 3015 is called anti-wicking. It is used to waterproof fiberglass laminated panel edges and routed openings. Apply 3015 with a small 3” paint roller or brush. Colors available are black and white and turn clear after curing.
A bead size of ¼” diameter is required for the water based, non-sag “back panel” adhesive.
Two 1/16” diameter beads are required. These two beads will yield 3,000 linear feet per gallon.
The 5100 can begin to “rip” plywood in 4-6 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
Apply 5100 with pump and flow equipment, gun, wand and applicator.
3100 is designed for use on wood and other fibrous substrates.
A minimum temperature of 40 degrees is required.
It only takes 2 minutes for the product to cure.
The temperature should be 115 degrees F +/- 5 degrees
The substrates should be between 40 and 100 degrees F.
The temperature should be set between 100-110 degrees F.
Only 5 minutes is needed.
5101 is best used in a typical back panel application. It is a non-sag for vertical applications.
1010 is best used for applications where a self-leveling material would be too runny. It is ideal for roof edge molding rails.
8100 should only be used with felt-backed materials. Do NOT use on SuperFlex or EPDM
For Lauan and smooth side OSB the recommended thickness is 10 mils. For rough side OSB it is 15 mils.

- The slope of the tank will be a minimum .25” per linear foot to the drain.
Fitting Information
- Fittings will be located as specified by the customer. Customer will provide a drawing to show fitting locations.
- When determining locations for fittings, make sure when installed, all stress is eliminated from fittings, tubing and tanks.
- Based on the recommendation from the USPC, Alpha strongly advises against the use of brass or metal fittings in conjunction with polyethylene spin fittings. Since brass or metal male fittings are much stronger than the plastic female threads of polyethylene spin fittings, the propensity for cross threading or other damage to the spin weld fittings increase significantly. Any warranty claims pertaining to fitting leaks or damage at that connection may be voided with the use of brass or metal fittings
Installation requirements
Holding tanks must be installed according to NFPA1192-2016 [section 7.5.1.2] to stay retained in place when a load equal to two times the holding tank’s filled weight is applied to the filled holding tank in any direction except upward. Where straps are used the tank shall be protected from any sharp edges of the strap.
Tanks must be supported on the 2 opposite longest sides of the tank. The tank can be supported by floater bar or bracket understanding the entire side is supported to end of tank. There must be a gap of 1/8” between the tank and the support mechanism (1/4” overall) to allow for expansion of tank during flood test. If you put the bar tight against the tank the tank will try to expand around the bar causing stress and possibly crack the tank. When placed in frame, the tank must drop easily in the opening. If there is any force needed to seat the tank in place, the bars are too tight.
It is preferred the supports on bottom of tank be secured to side supports to prevent the floater bar from expanding apart thus allowing the tank to dislodge from the unit.
Shutters Installation Guide
Your shutter package will include shutter plugs. Screws with caps are available. Most people prefer using shutter plugs. They can be used for all materials, such as siding and masonry.
Note: if you are working on a ladder to install your shutters, have a second person there to hold it for you. Work safe.
Let’s get started:
- When using plugs, have your 1/4″ drill bit and drill ready to use. Have a hammer and shutter plugs handy. Close to you.
- If using screws with caps, have your 1/8″ drill bit and drill ready to use. Have drill/screw gun with Philips head screw driver ready. Have the screws with caps and tools handy. Close to you.
- When drilling holes for shutter plugs or screws, consider where the hole will go into the wall. If brick, be sure to go into the mortar joint. All other sidings or stucco just mount on center and in four corners of shutters. Be sure to mount on the side rails of the shutter.
- When mounting 51″ and longer shutters, it is recommended to use 6 plugs or screws per shutter.
Caution: Do not over hammer shutter plugs or over drive the screws into the shutters. Just tighten until snug.
Instructions for using Plugs:
- Hold shutter in place next to window and center (top to bottom).
- Start in center of the shutter. On the left and right side of the shutter rail, drill through the shutter using the 1/4″ drill bit and into the wall 3″ deep. Continue to hold shutter in place. Drill one hole and carefully hammer in a shutter plug through the shutter and into the wall. Do the same thing on the other side. This helps hold the shutter in place while installed the rest of the fasteners.
- Now that you attached the shutter to the wall in the center of the shutter, continue this process into the four corners.
Instructions for using Screws with caps:
- Pre-slide the caps onto the screws. Do not snap down caps. Have tools and screws with caps handy. Close by.
- Hold shutter in place next to window and center (top to bottom).
- Start in center of the shutter. On the left and right side of the shutter rail, drill through the shutter ONLY using the 1/8″ bit. Do not drill into the wall. Run the screw with the cap through the shutter and into the wall. The screw should screw itself into the wall. Just snug. (Use plugs for masonry). Do the same steps on the other side. This helps hold the shutter in place while installed the rest of the fasteners. Go ahead and push-lock the caps onto each of the screws.
- Now that you attached the shutter to the wall in the center of the shutter, continue this process into the four corners.
You have completed your shutter installation.
Remember, if you do not have shutters on the back of your house, you should consider adding. This is where you spend most of your time. You’ll be amazed the difference it makes.
If you purchased “Paintable” shutters – you have received Flame Treated shutters.
We have done the “priming” already for you so you do not have to. The flame treating process makes the pores of the plastic surface expand allowing the paint to stick.
- Use either latex or oil-based paint made for plastic.
- Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions.
- Painting of the flame treated shutters must be completed within 30 days or paint may not adhere.
Note: Paint drying time will vary due to weather conditions. It may feel dry to the touch, but will not be completely cured for 7-14 days. Do not attempt to peel or scratch the paint until it has completely cured.
Superflex Roof Installation Instructions
- Route all necessary vent and accessory openings. Sand all wood decking openings, seams and edges to a smooth surface. Blow debris off roof (wood decking) with air hose.
- Apply duct tape (2” minimum width) evenly onto roof and sidewall to cover sharp metal or fiberglass edge.
- Optional: Apply a porous tape (masking or fiberglass mesh) to seam the decking where butted together. This will help hide decking seams and give the finished roof a smoother appearance while strengthening the joint.
- Make sure all screw heads and surface is smooth and level throughout.
- Place roof membrane on top of unit. Cut the roof sheet to fit roof length with an excess of at least 6” front and rear. Square as required.
- “Bed Sheet” the roof. That is, fold it in half so half of the deck is exposed.
- Apply water based adhesive, #8010 or #8011, in a wet film thickness of 8-10 mils with a paint roller or brush to the exposed half of the roof deck. (1 gal. will cover approximately 160-200 sq ft.)
- Lay the roof membrane over the wet #8010 or #8011 adhesive.
- Before removing air pockets with a squeegee (gray neoprene head will not streak), the membrane must be lifted and pulled taut from each of the four corners of the roof. The membrane needs to be adjusted both in width (side to side) and length (front to rear) to ensure the roof is as flat as possible before the squeegee process.
- Remove all air pockets with a squeegee; press firmly working from the center outward toward the edges. All wrinkles must be removed at this point for a quality installation. The roof will tighten and conform as the adhesive cures.
- Repeat steps 6 through 10 for remaining half of roof. (In mass production situations the entire roof may be glued all at once.)
- Using a utility knife “x” cut all roof openings. Make sure you round all 90-degree corners to eliminate the possibility of running cuts. Surplus material can be stapled inside the vent openings. Let surplus material drape over the side of the unit for perimeter finishing. The roof edges can be sharp – it is required that duct tape be used to avoid edge splits.
- Apply butyl tape to the backside of the roof-edge molding. (Size of butyl will depend on unit design) Then while holding the bar, draw surplus material tight with a downward pull. Attach the drip edge bar, working outward from the center of the unit. When fully installed, use a utility knife to cut surplus material from below the bar.
- Assemble and attach roof molding where the roof membrane meets the front and rear end caps. Remember the roof molding must be secured to a cross member.
- Apply butyl tape to all vents and accessories on the roof. QM-130 1/8” x ¾ is recommended for all roof top components where screws are used to penetrate roof membrane.
- Prior to sealing the roof, make sure to have Alpha #1021 self-leveling (for the top of the roof) and #1010 non-sag sealant (top of the roof-edge molding) available. Only Alpha supplied sealants can come in contact with your Superflex membrane. Do not use silicone! Silicone will not adhere to the Superflex roof membrane. Seal around all vents and accessories. Apply sealant to all visible screw heads. Both edges of the front and rear roof molding must also be sealed. There is no need to spread the sealant as you are applying it. A minimum 3/8” bead will work for most applications.
Your Superflex Roof Installation is now complete
* Butyl tape provides the “Primary Seal” against water infiltration or penetration in these membrane roof assemblies. The lap sealant is a secondary seal.
* Butyl tape must be compressed 30% to 40% to perform correctly.
Water Tank Installation Instructions
General Information
Material to be FDA approved (NSF 61 compliant)
Fitting Information
- Typical fittings include a fill, a vent and a drain. Sensors are optional.
- Fittings to be located per the customer print.
- When determining fitting locations make sure when installed all stress is eliminated from fittings, tubing and tanks. Use elbows to prevent partial bending or collapsing of the fill, drain or vent tubing when a change in direction is required.
- Tanks smaller than 30 gallons require minimum vent and drain of 3/8”.
Tanks larger than 30 gallons require minimum ½” vent and drain.
- Drain to be installed at the lowest point of the tank
- Vent to be installed at the highest point of the tank.
- If using pressure fill method – the diameter of the vent including fittings must be larger than or equal to the pressure fill pipe’s inside diameter including fittings. (1192-2016-7.3.7.5)
Water tanks must be installed according to NFPA 1192-2017[section7.3.7.3] to stay retained in place when a load equal to two times the water tank’s filled weight is applied to the filled tank in any direction except upward. Where straps are used the tank must be protected from any sharp edges of the straps.
